Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.
DTM Case Studies
By fully utilizing DTM for progress management, it reduced the PM's management workload and ensured smooth project management.
Kawasaki Heavy Industries was the first in Japan to develop and manufacture domestically-produced industrial robots, and since then, it has been a leading manufacturer of robots that support automation in various manufacturing sectors. Kawasaki's robots have enabled high-quality automation tasks tailored to the specific requirements of individual products and manufacturing lines, such as automotive body welding and food processing.
Background and Objectives of the Implementation
In the Robotics Business Center, each PM is responsible for managing multiple design and development projects simultaneously, which made it difficult to manage project planning, personnel resources, and outsourcing. To reduce management workload and improve management levels, the urgent challenge was to enable stakeholders to share project information without delay and allow progress tracking even from remote locations.
Implementation Approach
Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) adopted DTM, a package that extends the PM capabilities of Aras Innovator, which has become the standard PLM platform within the company. From the beginning, the team representative was actively involved in the evaluation process, and with the support of the user representative and the IT team at the Robotics Business Center, KHI successfully expanded the system's functionality to meet its specific requirements. This approach allowed KHI to effectively manage projects while aligning the system with the company's needs.
Benefits of the Implementation
Based on customer inquiries, PMs and development leaders registered project information and plans in DTM, checked the workload, assigned primary assignees, and created a draft plan. Once the plan was finalized through discussions with the customer, notifications of daily tasks were sent to the workers, and progress was registered. This allowed the PM to track progress in real-time. With this system, project management ran smoothly without frequent email exchanges, leading to reduced management workload for PMs and improved milestone adherence.
